Encounter and Conquest

by José O Solá | January 22nd, 2010

In 1492 Columbus sailed west to find a closer route to the riches of the east. History has constructed this event in such a way that the impact of the so-called Discovery has been minimized and the accomplishments of Columbus have been elevated to cult status. However, when Columbus sailed west he brought with him decades of knowledge that Europeans had acquired from Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. The lectures for the next two days will deal with the myths that emerged about the “Discovery” and I in the process I will place the events o 1492 into a historical content in which we can begin to understand the impact of Columbus and those who follow him.
